The Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries currently has over 200 contracts (for ebooks, ejournals and other databases) with vendors and publishers around the world for its member libraries. These contracts save libraries money and often allow libraries to offer content to their readers that would otherwise not be available. Historically these group contracts were only open to libraries which were formal members of the consortium. However, due to a recent policy change in the consortium the Alliance is now opening up these contracts to other libraries in the region (with publisher or vendor approval).
Libaries that are not members of the consortium that would like to participate in existing Alliance group contracts will pay a 3-5% surcharge (or $50 minimum) on top of an annual contract cost. However, even with this administrative surcharge the value of participating in a group deal may save substantial money for a local library.
